TED CANTU – HOT METRO FINDS: Im Over Here Now – RIOT FEST 2014 a

** You couldn’t SHUT ME UP if you tried.
==============================================

CHICAGO RIOT FEST 2014 WELCOMES THE PICTURE BOOKS – I don’t know much about this band but I found
some of their videos here….. They are very bluesy, very loud and soulful. Im sure in a live setting they have
a few tricks up their sleeve. I think these guys are playing on Day 3.

Heres what the official bio says….

The Picturebooks “Your Kisses Burn Like Fire” official music video from the band’s upcoming album “Imaginary Horse”

The Picturebooks album Imaginary Horse is out on RidingEasy Records on October 7, 2014. “Your Kisses Burn Like Fire” is the first single from the album.

The Picturebooks are a German alternative rock/blues rock duo (Fynn Claus Grabke and Philipp Mirtschink) who formed after meeting a skate park. The band released the albums “Artificial Tears” and a “List of People To Kill” independently in Europe before signing to RidingEasy Records in 2014. Imaginary Horse was recorded in the same garage where they regularly refurbish and repair motorcycles and choppers.

HOT METRO FINDS TED CANTU: – Response: Metro Detroit Party Bus lifts Detroit in high-end vodka bottle service, stripper poles

There is a message from Jeff T. Wattrick and MLive for the people of Metro Detroit. They are not very good  at getting the message across to the people and yet have been hammering on this very important point about Ted Cantu and Hot Metro Finds. So to be fair, I am going to help them out and get this message out.

http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/10/metro_detroit_party_bus_lifts.html

** I am not going to blow this out of proportion or resort to name calling, and distorted facts, ( like the ones listed in this article against me ) but I do need to address them.

In 2010, we did a nice promotional piece for a limousine company based in Troy, Michigan. They offer a party bus service and a whole range of different styles of party busses and vehicles for rent. Some of them do have stripper poles, hardwood floors, and state of the art sound systems.

We mentioned that offering corporate parties and bringing in corporate dollars would be good for Detroit. Never at any time did I ever say that it would solve everybodys problems. Detroit, in case you are completely out of it, has quite a few problems. Those problems aren’t going away any time soon.

I will answer all of these allegations in order.

1. “Empty Burnouts” – Here is a nice hint of drug use on my part. This is a pretty serious allegation. I do not partake in recreational drugs. I am certainly not a “burnout” or have any State or Federal drug convictions.

NOTE: We did some promotional work for some local 420 Clinics and some hydroponic retail stores during 2010 – 2013. We entered that space because of hypey articles on the web and in print that stated this was going to be a profitable new industry for Michigan. After dealing with heavily “medicated” and confused business owners who continuously come up short financially we decided to leave that space permenantly. We do very little with that industry today.

2. The picture of the vehicle on the site – That is not my vehicle. I actually drive a 2013 Chevy. Before that I drove a Pontiac.

3. Chauffer License – I do not own a chauffer license.

4. Transportation Company – I also do not own a transportation company.

5. Liquor License – I do not own a liquor license. In fact, I have never applied for one.
You can contact the State of Michigan to dig up records to see if I have one, or have ever
owned one, or to see if I have had one taken away.

** That being said I have never owned a bar or restaurant or a strip club. This article implies my
direct involvement in quite a few different businesses. I deny owning any of them.

Here is part of what I said about this whole venture of bringing in corporate parties into Detroit.

Oct. 25, Emailwire: “This is the kind of thing that is going to help change our economic landscape. It really sets a positive tone for Metro Detroit and how upscale our downtown can really be especially in times like these. Think of the implications of what this can mean for corporate parties, Detroit sporting events and the way we live. I can see how this can bring more people to the Motor City.”

NOTE: What I said was something positive in tone. I stand by my words. It’s sad to have to tell  you this but at any given time you could shoot a cannon ball down any one of our Detroit streets and not hit anything. I hear of great things like a “Revolution”, ( I don’t see any revolutions happening in Detroit) and great change happening. I also see a mass exodus in our state that has been happening since 2009.

Keep in mind, we have never had any dealings with Mlive except for one time. My colleague Danco Sotirovski who runs WorkFly  invited me to a meeting with them in their Southfield, Michigan office.
At this meeting I only observed and did nothing more than introduce myself. Danco Sotirovski
did all of the talking. I was joined with two other people at this meeting.

** That being said, I have also never had any dealings with Jeff T. Wattrick or ever met him in person.
I have also never said anything deregatory against Mlive.

I am not sure what Mlive’s intended outcome for this article was supposed to be.
Obviously, I am most concerened about the drug referrence.

You have my permission to contact my attorney on any of these issues.

HOT METRO FINDS: THE MUFFS Play Reggies Rock Club in Chicago This New Years Eve 2014

CHICAGO – Why welcome the New Year in Detroit? Well, you could but wouldn’t you rather go see something INTERESTING? Like THE MUFFS? Kim Shattuck and the band will be playing at Reggie’s Rock Club in the South Side of Chicago. You know all about the South Side right? It’s always interesting…. And packs quite a history – that being said, you should be there.

The Muffs are back with the 2014 release, “Whoop Dee Doo”. These guys were really active in the 90’s and then took a big break from what I could tell. They only gave us two albums in the last ten years. Maybe it’s a sign of the times or maybe they are just sick of the whiney stuff on the radio. You know some of these groups have to come back because they are just so darn interesting.

They aren’t going to shoot all the way to Detroit and then off to New York… oh no, they are going to play this one gig in Chicago and then shoot back west. So if you don’t see this time – you can forget it.

Here’s what we know about the upcoming show…..
NYE BASH!

The Muffs

White Mystery, Evil Beaver, Meat Wave

Wednesday Dec 31, 2014

8:00 PM

17 and over

$25 – $120
Reggies Rock Club
2109 South State St
Chicago, IL
** You can get special VIP seating right over the stage in this very cool looking balcony.

The deal is that I saw Slaughter and the Dogs here back in October just a couple of weeks after Riot Fest and it is a great place for a show. It’s in the South Side and the businesses that surround it are closed at that hour. That means that this place can get really loud. This used to be an old brakes repair shop so there are lots of cool iron staircases and balconies. If you don’t feel like standing in the pit you can go sit up stairs in the big lounge chairs and see the show. The visibility is great from up there. That being said, there is really no bad seat in the entire house.

** As for Detroit – no worries there, it will still be there when you get back.

HOT METRO FINDS: Michigan Loses Gamble on Medical Marijuana –Ted Cantu

METRO DETROIT – Four years ago I never seen so much enthusiasm for medical marijuana, hydroponic stores and 420 clinics. There was such a media uproar for this sort of business it had a lot of people thinking that this could be the next Colorado. The other thing was even more bizarre in the news. I remember reading something about Geoffrey Figer was talking about Detroit being the new Amsterdam. All of this hoopla was kind of interesting. As a search engine guy you can imagine our phones ringing to help these hydroponic guys.

We were riding on the wave of the green scene but it was going to be a short ride. As a non-user I found the experience to be bordering on ridiculous and at times very insane. Our office met with some of the cities wackiest characters. Some of the medical marijuana people were questionable and they referred to themselves as doctors. We helped them optimize their websites and made some web videos on YouTube.com. As web people we never really got into checking their credentials and gather detailed information on their medical requirements.

Hydroponic companies were also enthusiastic and were growing at a rapid rate. Walled Lake, Michigan which is a very small town boasted at least six businesses that I know of. This included 420 clinics in retail spaces as well as hydroponic stores that sold a wide range of growing media. What I found was that these guys came from all walks of life and not all of them from good places. Some of the guys I ran into were downright unsavory and poor business people. Some of the guys that we had to work for were tuned up all the time on “medication” and would have a 5 minute memory. This made getting our job done very difficult.

By the summer of 2014 a lot of these shops folded including the popular Hydro Harrys. The 420 clinics went first and rightly so. We noticed that many of these guys didn’t even have their own clinic and that they piggy backed off another existing doctors office. This may have been due to legal reasons or because of a lack of funds. They were very difficult to work for because they just didn’t have any money to do all the fancy search engine optimization and viral media. As far as legitimately holding their title as a doctor that is up for debate. I am aware that the official story is that Michigan racked up 10 Million dollars of tax revenue – at least that’s what they say. But the guys we met and worked with were always broke. Worse, some of these guys got evicted out of their buildings.

This overly optimistic time period was known as the, “Green Gold” period on the street. But reality dealt a pretty serious hand. The shops were pretty vacant on most days and foot traffic was almost nill. My theory fell into two areas. One, there wasn’t that many people growing medical marijuana. The other thing was these shops did very little to promote themselves when I wasn’t around. One store in particular on Woodward Avenue, (it’s closed for good now) had a room full of stock guys who sat around watching the Mets play on TV.

Some of those stores opened an online ordering system where people could buy supplies off the web. When it came to shipping the products it was another hurdle. The big nutrient drums were too expensive to ship. I mean, this stuff was incredibly heavy and the owners of the hydro stores would complain all the time about it. It was a goofy business and I got caught up in this because I believed the media hype that this was going to change the Michigan economic landscape.

I was off on that one… and so was everybody else. People went to jail in this short time frame. But those weren’t the ones that got the most media attention. Some of the growers got into this mindset where they could be the next Al Capone and sell dope for a living under the table. They ended up on the news of course. But there was the guys that had the CO2 gas or whatever it was rigged up in their houses. Long story short their houses exploded. At least that’s what I saw happen on the news. Some guy in Belleville accidently blew up his house. But that’s not why I left the whole bizarre fiasco.

The real reason why I didn’t stick around was because I didn’t have to patience to deal with these stoned business owners. The money was terrible. And I actually switched over to lucrative home improvement companies because I was tired of the riff raff – and the non-existent pay. You see, towards the end of the wave the only guys who were optimistic about this whole scene was the media. The perception was that this new style of business was going to save Michigan, (despite a major exodus). NBC was right in there with the rest of the media citing California and Colorado as financial role models.

But I was on the inside track and I could tell you these guys barely had enough money for gas every day. They were living on thin margins. Now, to be fair, maybe I am a jerk and am not – “Pro Michigan” enough. Maybe I lack sympathy. But it was not a business I could get excited about. It certainly wasn’t scalable. I know there will be many medical marijuana defenders out there touting the great riches of money being made in this industry. Myself, personally, I am relieved that I am out of that whole stupid dopey rock and roll circus.

As the major players are thinning out I am somewhat reflective. Right now there is another boom happening with the whole e-cig market which is valued at 1 Billion. I am not excited about that very much because I see these shops being run in very much the same way as the medical marijuana people. There are a lot of shop owners and employees staggering around stoned chomping on a metal stogie. These guys are oblivious to anyone walking into their shops. I got to wonder if these guys have any real staying power. As far as money goes there is more money in funerals than there is in these hype industries. The funeral market rolls in at 11 Billion annually.

We will be going more into detail about our misadventures in this market in an upcoming article.

Fun stuff. But not for me.

TED CANTU SPEAKS OUT: The Official Detroit Doors Tribute Band, Art Heroes, and The Dying City

DETROIT – We held back on the Detroit stories as long as we could. We wanted to keep the angle positive for as long as possible. But digging around Detroit you start to uncover some interesting and strange things. There is one group in particular. We encountered a Black youth run clothing line based in Detroit that designed some t-shirts and shorts. These guys are somewhat unsung heroes in the city. They are – Enjoy Detroit – and the kids love them. These guys are pretty interesting and have quite a following. The major media hasn’t really picked up on them yet for some reason and that is strange – considering that they were invited to some of their big events. The media wasn’t interested in that kind of Detroit  – you know, where the kids give back to the community.

That is unfortunate for everyone. Because there is a story here that is under the radar and as usual, we found them. We will be bringing you that one shortly…..  This is one of those moments when you find something on the cusp of being huge… just like Valentine Vodka, and the other time when we found the Ruiners, (look at the dates on the videos on YouTube… we were there first).

THE DETROIT DOORS TRIBUTE BAND

I don’t want to stay on this subject too long, ( who would?) but I admit I was nominated as the Official Detroit Doors Tribute Band agent. That’s a pretty strong title to hand off to someone who has no agent experience but it was more of an honorary title. You know, the way we honor Bill Cosby as a doctor, (but we’re  not going to get into the specifics). There are a lot of half truths out there but I would like to say that I was part of that thing. I was the one who tried to get them into Motor City Casino. We mostly did small shows and never did anything substantial except for the time I got one of their videos mentioned in NME Magzine in the UK. For some reason the Brits dig the Detroit Doors… go figure.

Anyways that’s how I got stuck with their domain name.  We attached it to Hot Metro Finds. For some reason they didn’t think claiming ownership of it was very important so I ended up keeping it. That is how it became mine – through a default of ownership. I paid for it anyways.

I ended up getting out of that role as agent. I was only interested in managing them if they could get a run at my families casino, Soaring Eagle in Mount Pleasant. The guy that does the shows wouldn’t book us. Look, I’m not an agency… get it? Anways, I want to get that out there before more allegations fly around about me. I only had a small role in their development.

DETROIT – THE DYING CITY
What a weird time this has been.  I have seen so many businesses go out of business for very stupid reasons. The small retail guys are the most interesting. They will tell me they don’t need to promote themselves in any way and that running a business is all about word of mouth. Needless to say a lot of these guys didn’t make it. I have seen restaurants go under, clothing stores go under, and retail stores of all kinds close their doors. I even had two clients kill themselves in 2010.

And for what? You need to promote yourself. You need to get the word out. You need to be vocal.

Out of all the places I have lived I nominate Metro Detroit to be the most resistant to change. But you have to change and you have to adapt. Too much is at stake and there is too much failure happening in our city streets.

And when you mention it out loud people look at you like you lost your mind.

Don’t stare back at me. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK: Out Of The Blizzard Into The Night – HOT METRO FINDS – TED CANTU

LIVE AT THE ARK, ANN ARBOR, MI
NOV. 20   2014

ANN ARBOR, MI – Robyn Hitchock has slipped into view again and in limited portions. He has long held a special place in his heart for Ann Arbor, Michigan which makes total sense. They get him. At least, they used to. Maybe they still do. The core audience has shifted around and have spread across the country since his big heyday in the late 80’s. The iconic School Kids Records has downsized considerably, (I am not even sure if they exist anymore). And the Alternative late night shows on MTV have disappeared into the blasé’ world of reality pregnancy television. Now how in the world do people in Ann Arbor associate Robyn to the cold desolate streets of the college crowd?

So that means the ghosts of the past remember him. I am one of those grey ghosts. I am also a raving fan. I have seen Robyn perform six times and even once with the Soft Boys.  The night he blew into town, literally, there as a torrential snow blizzard out that made travelling ridiculous. Cars slid all over the highway, sometimes sideways, and spinning out of control and you could see them off the side in the ditch. I raced onward because I wanted to go for that special, “Number 7” show. This episode was a real Ann Arbor style homecoming. Robyn would be playing at the ARK. Now, why he didn’t play down in St. Andrews Hall in Detroit I have no idea but if I was his publicist I would most likely say, “Why mess up a good thing?”.

I would have opted for a Blind Pig performance just because it would have seen more appropriate, ( I caught the EYE tour there so many years ago).  But alas, it was the Ark for us and I was just glad to be near the song writing master again. For me, the party with Robyn Hitchcock never really ended. When I lived out in the East Coast this guy would tour constantly and he would pop up in Manhattan, New Jersey and he would come out with a new album with great frequency. He never stopped working. He was also easier to catch than the elusive Lloyd Cole, (who does Manhattan and then races off to London and beyond). Robyn will actually tour different cities in the U.S.

There was a great blend of the old and the new songs on this latest tour. It was like a transmission from some phantom tv station. There were songs in here from the Soft Boys days as well as obscure tracks off of his many releases.  The nights songs started out somewhat ominous with, “The Abyss” and set the stage for some introspection. That was followed up by, “The Wreck of the Arthur Lee”. We picked up with, “Only the Stones Remain” from the –Underwater Moonlight album. Robyn always stays in character throughout his performances and in his interviews. He is a living surrealist and an electric poet and there is never any kind of put on with him. I suppose that is what is so fascinating about him. Ann Arbor really had a strong connection with Hitchcock when, “Fegmania” came out and was even featured on the local radio station for an interview. On that particular time he rambled on about his favorite trees in the city that he liked to climb. Maybe that’s why he treated us to, “I’m Only You”.

There were happy days in the late 80’s. The wide range of musical tracks that flowed from Hitchcock over the years were entertaining, fresh and creative. They took my mind away from what the displeasure I was feeling with the world around me. The radio waves were consumed by a lot of ear splitting negative crap, lots of grunge, lots of droll pontifications of doom. I often needed a break from that type of audio drivel and would throw on some of Hitchcock’s work to even things out. I yearned for balance and his work was so creative and fulfilling that it balanced out the void. The Metro Detroit radio stations stayed in the year 1993 in lots of cases and just keep heaping on the worst of the worst – even still. I think the radio stations in and around Ann Arbor are more giving and I often hear tracks by The Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Hot Hot Heat, and once in a while somebody really obscure. I think that is why Robyn stays loyal to that town. There is a magnetic force field around that town — a kind of frequency, that is welcome. He belongs there. He definitely fits in there quite nicely.

Another area where Robyn fits in is the kind of music he plays. You know he never really let go of his roots. He belted out , “Arnold Layne” from Pink Floyd. In many ways he really is closely related to the creative energy of Syd Barrett and even sounds like him. There is another irresistible source of material here stemming from The Velvet Underground. Robyn treated the room to a  version of, “New Age”.

There is something that Robyn delivers to the audience that goes beyond mere music. It is a gift. He is giving the people an experience and there is a delicate kind of energy to it that stays with you. It is almost a kind of energy transfer that you can take with you and use in your own daily experience, (if you so choose to). He is not just there to rock your ear drums although that does happen.

Then after the applause, he nodded, and then faded back into the night. I don’t know when we will meet up again but I don’t doubt that we will meet up again in the future. I am part of that mysterious frequency that he exists in. Furthermore I happen to like it there.

DUMB AND DUMBER TO: Is It Worth The 20 Year Wait? – Hot Metro Finds Review

DETROIT – First of all I can’t believe it’s really been twenty years since the first, “Dumb and Dumber” came out. I remember seeing the preview for the first movie in the theater with the song, “Funky Town” playing in the background and groaning in my chair. I remember thinking that Jim Carrey really jumped the shark already and his career was barely taking off. I surely never thought anyone would even go for this dumb kind of comedy. Would you believe that I actually skipped out from seeing it.  It was only until a family member came to visit did I break down and rent it from our local video store.

But then a really strange thing happened and I ended up laughing out loud throughout most of it. I mean, I really enjoyed it. In fact, this particular film really got me over my funk with Jim Carrey and I actually became a fan of his. It was also my first introduction to the Farrelly Brothers and their outrageous sense of comedy. They later gave us – “Kingpin”,  and “The Three Stooges”.

Whew! The reviews are coming in for, “Dumb and Dumber To” and they are calling this thing one of the worst things ever committed to film. Myself, I was ready for some more of that outrageous comedy. After months of zombie movies, talking horror dolls, and Ouija boards I needed something that was fall down hilarious. I am not even going to go into the recent wave of goofy survival movies and this maze runner nonsense. We needed a trip back down to dumb. Dumb it down. Dumb is good.

Why in the world did the Farrelly Brothers wait 20 years to get another one of these things out? We could have used some prime laughs during that long break. In the future some film reviewer will write a discourse on the Farrelly Brothers and classify, “Dumb and Dumber”, “When Harry Met Lloyd”, “The Three Stooges” (remake) and this latest one, “Dumb and Dumber To” as part of the same series. Thematically they do have a lot in common. It’s the common people vs the rich in grandiose characterizations. The plots have interesting life and death consequences and do have the tendency to get morbidly serious if only for a moment. The formula has stayed consistent because people can relate to it. This is the same kind of fodder that existed in the original Three Stooges comedies. And even then the people at that time didn’t take to them immediately because they, as my grandmother put it, “tried too hard to be funny”.

Every generation of comedy has that certain someone that pushes things too far. Jerry Lewis had that same problem and it time for him to grow on people. As I said earlier I had the same sort of problem with Jim Carrey. But seeing these two nitwits on screen was a welcomed relief. The audience I saw this with seemed to really enjoy it. I saw this on opening weekend and it was a packed house. The guys sitting behind me a few rows back couldn’t really keep it together. They busted out loud with laughter and didn’t even cover their mouths. It seems that people really do like these sort of comedies and let’s get real here for a second because if you really want to talk about what is terrible I could go in my review on, “Scary Movie 4”.

I’m not going to ruin the plot for you in this review. There are plenty of other sites that will do that for you. But the film takes on this epic journey mentality and that just feels refreshing even if that journey is insane. The humor is gross and at times sexist and ridiculous but isn’t that what you paid for? The jokes are delivered here in rapid speed and that works great on film. This is where it gets interesting. This style of joke delivery also worked great in, “Anchorman 2: Ron Burgundy – The Legend Continues”. The backdrops include wide open highways, a road trip, funeral parlors, rich mansions and these are fantastic places for rapid fire dumb comedy and observations. But this type of comedy doesn’t work well for me in a TV sit com with only one room such as ABC’s horrendously awful, “Young & Hungry” or “Cristela”. There the comedy seems forced and the laughter doesn’t seem deserved due to bad timing.

The premise, I will go into briefly, is that Harry, (played by Jeff Daniels) needs a kidney transplant. This leads to a search for a long lost daughter. Jim Carrey has the hots for Harry’s daughter and together they get wrapped up in a murder plot. There is a cross country road journey that puts them on course to a science summit in El Paso, Texas. There is more confrontation of the dumb vs society at this conference called, “The Ken Conference” which is a parody of the TED culture. Along the journey we are subjected to insane flashbacks of the past as well as bizarre love influenced fantasy sequences ala Lloyd, (Jim Carrey). The ending is something you will have to just experience for yourself but it will be worth it.

The good news is that this movie is laugh out loud funny. You might second guess the experience once you walk out of the theater. There is a good chance that your date will not understand you or gain a lower sense of opinion of you. That being said don’t use this for a date movie. Go see something friendly and totally off the wall like maybe, “The Maze Runner”. But if you want something that is flat out hilarious and outrageous go see, “Dumb and Dumber To”.

My favorite parts are when Harry meets his Chinese step parents after years of separation. This entire sequence is totally inappropriate and culturally insensitive but truly funny. It is a guilty pleasure because it collides head on with the worst multicultural stereotypes. There is no pause or fast forward button and it is very uncomfortable to watch – but worth it. Another great moment for me was when Harry meets up with the legal guardians of his daughter. There is a cell phone sequence that takes place at the mansion that is straight out of MAD Magazine.

I give this movie three stars out of five. It is not going to win any awards but then you never know, (Yentl won a Global Globe Award). Oh and if by chance you ignore all the negative reviews and do check this out for yourself be on the lookout for the soundtrack in this film. I particularly liked Franz Ferdinand, “Right Action”  which accentuates certain key moments of this film. The team at the Farrelly Brothers have a great pop sensibility. All those years ago they gave us the fantastic sounds of Echobelly.

You will like this movie. You will love it if you really give it a chance.

And my word is my bond. James Bond.
